What went on at Care Roadshow Liverpool 2014?

Care Roadshow Liverpool 2014 took place at Aintree Racecourse on the 3rd June. The event hosted an informative seminar programme led by care industry experts, cookery demonstrations and a varied assortment of exhibitors showcasing the latest products and services for the care sector.

Highlights from the show included a seminar from Damian Utton from Dementia Services Development Centre, updates from the CQC and a discussion from Sheila Scott, Chief Executive of National Care Association.

Cookery demonstrations from Cordon Vert Cookery School gave visitors some fresh ideas to take back to their settings and apetito showed visitors how to tackle the issues of providing appealing and nutritious meals for those with swallowing difficulties. 2014 Seminars

 10.30 - 11.00am:
Making the Care Environment Dementia Friendly

Richard Pollock, Director of Architecture & Damian Utton, Design Associate, Dementia Services Development Centre

It is very important that any specialised care environment is carefully designed to reduce the trauma of moving from home and be as welcoming, secure and homelike as possible. This presentation will give examples of some simple principles of interior design and specific environmental changes that will generally improve everyone’s chances of living better in their current environment. Such changes will make things a lot better for some and may have a profound impact on certain people. Whatever our relationship to a person with dementia we can all make a positive difference by knowing about the impact that the environment has.
Lee Sheppard, apetito
 11.30 - 12.00pm:
Dining with Dignity – How do you create nutritious, appealing meals for those with swallowing difficulties?

Lee Sheppard, Divisional Manager, Care Homes, apetito

Over 40% of nursing home residents have swallowing difficulties that impact on their ability to eat and drink. For these residents, food and fluid consistencies need to be modified in line with the National Patient Safety Associations Texture Descriptors. However, creating texture-modified dishes that are safe, visually appealing and nutritious is a huge challenge and one that is poorly understood in the care home industry. Residents, both legally and morally, deserve to be presented with dishes appropriate to their needs, yet in many homes, this is far from the case. Come along to our interactive session to see how you can address this challenge.
CQC logo
 12.45 - 1.15pm:
CQC – Changes to how we inspect and regulate services

Fiona Bryan, Inspection Manager, Care Quality Commission

Fiona Bryan, Inspection Manager for CQC will provide an update about recent organisational restructures within CQC and the latest changes to the methodologies for the inspection of adult social care services. From April 1 2014 to mid-May, 264 locations across the country will be inspected using the new methodology as part of Wave 1. Wave 2 will start in July and CQC will be inspecting a much larger percentage of providers with more inspectors being involved. Fiona will give an overview of the first wave and a progress report on how the new methodology is being applied, with a timeline of when the new approach will be fully implemented.
National Care Association logo
 2.00 - 2.30pm:
Are you ready for the Care Bill?

Sheila Scott OBE, Chief Executive, National Care Association

What do we all need to know to keep up with new legislation this year?

• The Department of Health has just finished consulting on new regulations surrounding standards
• The Department of Health has also just finished a consultation on a new criminal offence of ill treatment or neglect
• The Care Quality Commission has just begun a consultation on their new approach to regulating, inspecting and rating adult social care services‏

This is one aspect, the other of course remains Local Government funding of long term care.
We will make sure your voice is heard if you tell us what you think.
