What went on at Care Roadshow Leeds Bradford 2014?

Care Roadshow Leeds Bradford 2014 took place at the Cedar Court Hotel on 13th May. The event hosted an informative seminar programme led by care industry experts, hands-on activity workshops and a varied assortment of exhibitors showcasing the latest products and services for the care sector.

Highlights from the show included a seminar from Pauline Cameron from Dementia Services Development Centre, updates from the CQC and a discussion from Sheila Scott, Chief Executive of National Care Association.

Oomph’s activity workshop got visitors dancing in their chairs and gave them some inspiration to take back to their settings and apetito showed visitors how to tackle the issues of providing appealing and nutritious meals for those with swallowing difficulties.

2014 Seminars

 10.30 - 11.00am:
Meaningful Activity for people with dementia

Pauline Cameron, Training Officer, Dementia Services Development Centre

When facilitating participation in activity for a person with dementia it is very important that we understand the impact of the illness. We need to recognise and respect choice in an enabling environment irrespective of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, cultural or other needs. This presentation will show how we can support colleagues and family carers to be involved in a person centred programme of activity which enhances the wellbeing of the person, emphasising the development of effective communication skills in order to be able to engage and involve people with dementia at every stage of the illness.

Lee Sheppard, apetito
 11.30 - 12.00pm:
Dining with Dignity – How do you create nutritious, appealing meals for those with swallowing difficulties?

Lee Sheppard, Divisional Manager, Care Homes, apetito

Over 40% of nursing home residents have swallowing difficulties that impact on their ability to eat and drink. For these residents, food and fluid consistencies need to be modified in line with the National Patient Safety Associations Texture Descriptors. However, creating texture-modified dishes that are safe, visually appealing and nutritious is a huge challenge and one that is poorly understood in the care home industry. Residents, both legally and morally, deserve to be presented with dishes appropriate to their needs, yet in many homes, this is far from the case. Come along to our interactive session to see how you can address this challenge.

Deborah Westhead CQC
 12.45 - 1.15pm:
Achieving Excellence in Social Care: Challenges for the Future

Deborah Westhead, Deputy Chief Inspector for Adult Social Care in the North Region, Care Quality Commission

Adult social care is hugely important, it is the largest sector that the CQC regulates, with a wide range of providers that support and enhance the lives of many people. A fresh start for the regulation and inspection of adult social care sets out our programme of work ahead. Most importantly it describes how we are going to work in partnership to develop our proposals and make sure they are the right ones. We want our approach to identify, highlight and celebrate good practice. We want it to inspire providers to strive to be outstanding, and to continuously improve standards. We must not tolerate mediocre or poor care. Our inspections will therefore look at whether the service is safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led. This presentation will explain the Care Quality Commissions priorities for transforming how we will monitor, inspect and regulate care homes and other adult social care services, with a greater focus on involvement and improvement.

National Care Association logo 2.00 - 2.30pm:
Are you ready for the Care Bill?

Sheila Scott OBE, Chief Executive, National Care Association

What do we all need to know to keep up with new legislation this year?

• The Department of Health has just finished consulting on new regulations surrounding standards
• The Department of Health has also just finished a consultation on a new criminal offence of ill treatment or neglect
• The Care Quality Commission has just begun a consultation on their new approach to regulating, inspecting and rating adult social care services‏

This is one aspect, the other of course remains Local Government funding of long term care.
We will make sure your voice is heard if you tell us what you think.
