Pauline Cameron, Training Officer, DSDC University of Stirling Dementia Design
This seminar introduces the work of the Dementia Services Development Centre, University of Stirling and helps us identify and understand the barriers to effective and meaningful communication for people with dementia. Good communication is the key to unlocking memories, seeing the person instead of the dementia and makes a real difference to the quality of life for people with dementia and their families. The presentation will include examples of how poor communication can lead to situations which staff find challenging and suggest simple interventions which we can utilise to improve the journey of dementia for people with dementia and their families, whilst at the same time, motivate and enthuse paid carers.

Jess Alexander, Workforce Development and Planning, Scottish Social Services Council
An introduction to the Scottish Social Services Council’s (SSSC) new leadership development website Step into Leadership, highlighting the importance of the leadership capabilities, how the Continuous Learning Framework can be used to support individual and organisational leadership development, and how social services workers, managers, and people who use services can access a variety of leadership development resources via the four leadership pathways.

How can we get the ageing population exercising to benefit their bodies and minds?
Ben Allen and Julie Christensen, Oomph!
Residential care homes and nursing homes in the UK have diverse populations. From dementia to arthritis, depression to osteoporosis, regular exercise can provide huge benefits. In some cases exercise does not just improve but rather transform the lives of the residents. Before we demonstrate a fun chair based exercise class to the workshop (where everybody will be encouraged to take part!) we will discuss both the physiological and psychological benefits of exercise for the elderly, and what impact it can have.
