Dignity and Respect

Mary Hattie, Nursing Officer, Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland

The Commission published its Dignity and Respect Report last year, looking at the impact of the Scottish Dementia Standards on the delivery of care for individuals who are in the later stages of their dementia journey. The findings and recommendations it contains are relevant to all settings providing care for individuals with dementia.

In this session we will discuss our findings with a focus on:

• Person centred care planning and the importance of life histories
• Activities (A meaningful day)
• Management of Stress and Distress
• Use of psychoactive medication

Highlighting good practice and some common areas of concern.

Nursing in Care Homes – Challenges and Opportunities for the Future

Lawrence Cowan, Policy Officer, Royal College of Nursing

The population is ageing. In the future more people are likely to have complex needs and live with multiple conditions. Nursing needs to be prepared for these changes.

As the voice of nursing, RCN Scotland is very active in shaping the future of the care home sector. In this seminar we will explore the future opportunities and challenges for nursing in delivering safe and effective care in care homes.

Sector reform, recruitment, retention and professional development needs will all be explored and people will have their chance to voice their views on how we develop a care home sector that is fit for the future.

10.00 – 10.20am:  Plate Presentation: Enhancing the Dining Experience
Charlotte Rodriguez & Neil Hargreaves, apetito

When it comes to making a difference at mealtimes, food presentation is an extremely important aspect to get right as well as a key concern for care staff. So, how can care home staff respond to the challenges to provide nutritious, delicious meals that residents enjoy, look forward to and actually eat?

apetito will host an interactive workshop on the importance of food presentation with active demonstrations to help care staff ensure each and every meal served is presented in an attractive and appetising way.

The workshop will finish with a competition to win a bottle of champagne.

1.30 – 1.50pm:  Dysphagia: Dining with Dignity
Charlotte Rodriguez & Neil Hargreaves, apetito

With 68% of people with dementia in a care home suffering from dysphagia, it’s essential that care staff know how to best cater for those with the condition. apetito will host a session on everything care managers need to know about catering for this complex condition – from who can typically suffer and potential health implications, to detailing the standards for texture modified meals.

Audience members will also be invited to create their own texture modified meals and then sample apetito’s range of award-winning texture modified meals first hand.

The workshop will finish with a competition to win a bottle of champagne.apetito logo

Lost and incorrectly returned garments can cause great distress to residents and their relatives and, with this in mind, Snappy Tag is pleased to introduce a quick, easy and cost-effective way to name residents’ clothing. Snappy Tags are discreet, and resemble small buttons, making them comfortable and unobtrusive to the wearer. Names are permanently laser etched into the tag, ensuring that they will never fade, even in industrial laundry conditions.
