What went on at Care Roadshow Glasgow 2014?

Care Roadshow Glasgow 2014 took place at Hampden Park Stadium on 4th March. The event hosted an informative seminar programme led by care industry experts, hands-on activity workshops and a varied assortment of exhibitors showcasing the latest products and services for the care sector.

Highlights from the show included a seminar from Scottish Care’s Chief Executive Ranald Mair which looked at the changes to the landscape of care for older people in Scotland. Oomph’s activity workshop got visitors dancing in their chairs and gave them some inspiration to take back to their settings and apetito showed visitors how to tackle the issues of providing appealing and nutritious meals for those with swallowing difficulties.

2014 Seminars

Ranald Mair Scottish Care
 10.30 - 11.00am:
The Changing Landscape of Care in Scotland

Ranald Mair, Chief Executive, Scottish Care

2014/15 is likely to see the most significant changes in the landscape of care for older people in Scotland for a decade.

• Health and Social Care Integration
• Joint Strategic Commissioning
• Self-Directed Support
• Review of the National Care Standards
• The Taskforce on Residential Care

Will it deliver improved outcomes for service users? What will it mean for providers? Should we see it as threat or opportunity?
Ranald will give his annual review of development and assess the likely impact on the sector.

Lee Sheppard, apetito
 11.30 - 12.00pm:
Dining with Dignity – How do you create nutritious, appealing meals for those with swallowing difficulties?

Lee Sheppard, Divisional Manager, Care Homes, apetito

Over 40% of nursing home residents have swallowing difficulties that impact on their ability to eat and drink. For these residents, food and fluid consistencies need to be modified in line with the National Patient Safety Associations Texture Descriptors. However, creating texture-modified dishes that are safe, visually appealing and nutritious is a huge challenge and one that is poorly understood in the care home industry. Residents, both legally and morally, deserve to be presented with dishes appropriate to their needs, yet in many homes, this is far from the case. Come along to our interactive session to see how you can address this challenge.

Alzheimer Scotland logo
 12.45 - 1.15pm:
Is music the best medicine? Enhancing the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers.

Sarah Burgess, Regional Manager, Alzheimer’s Scotland

Can a daily prescription of listening to music improve a person with dementia's mood and wellbeing; and can it also have a positive impact on the carer? Alzheimer Scotland has found that people with dementia who enjoy music often benefit from its use within day care groups or at home. However, there can be limited appreciation of how music could be used by people as a therapeutic intervention, particularly at home. Often the carer is not privy to the positive effects on the person with dementia and fails to witness the change in the person's mood as well as how it impacts on their wellbeing.

This seminar will explore some research around this topic and seek to demonstrate the positive impacts that music therapy can have on the person with dementia and their carer by using MP3 players and headphones.

 2.00 - 2.30pm:
Changing the Culture of Care

Jilly Polson, Dementia Lead Associate, Dementia Services Development Centre

The standard of care that people with dementia receive is of national and international concern. While professional bodies are engaged in quality improvement programmes, most of the contact people with dementia receive comes from unqualified staff. These are typically low-paid workers, most of whom have received no training in dementia care.

In all sectors the necessity to make the transition from a task oriented culture to one which is focussed on the person is now almost universally accepted but individuals, who may have been engaged in care work for many years, can have deeply held views on the way they practice. Consequently, changing values attitudes and beliefs and the person’s perception of situations involves helping them to see things from a different perspective.

The presentation will show that the process of change can be initiated by facilitation of learning which recognises and values life and previous experience, understands individual learning styles, encourages reflection on practice and allows people to try out new ideas in a safe and non-judgemental environment. Staff can be helped to develop their existing skills, gain new knowledge and improve their care of people with dementia. Effective facilitation will empower learners increasing both levels of confidence and their perception of their value within the care setting.
