| 11.30am: What does the CQC’s inspection programme around dignity and nutrition mean for the care homes sector’s nutritional standards?
Lee Sheppard, Divisional Manager - Care Homes, apetito
2011 saw a hugely increasing focus on Nutrition from the CQC. Starting with a 3 month inspection programme into 100 Hospitals, which found that 49% of Hospitals were not fully compliant, the CQC have announced that there will be a further 500, “Dignity & Nutrition Inspections” in 2012. The Inspections will take place from April to June, with a report expected in the autumn. With the NACC recently launching its best-practice guide, “How to Comply with CQC's Outcome 5: Meeting Nutritional Needs,” Healthcare Improvement Scotland publishing “Improving Nutrition...Improving Care” supported by a raft of other Nutrition initiatives, there is no doubt that Nutrition in care home catering has a far greater focus than ever before. Against this, BAPEN have recently announced that 41% of Care Home residents are at risk of malnutrition, so this seminar asks, “What is The Future for Nutritional Standards in Our Care Home Sector?”

 | 12.30pm: The Critical Role of the Manager in Good Social Care
David Lane, Social Care Association
There are 28,000 managers of regulated care services in England alone. They are acknowledged to be a key influence on quality of service. They work between residents and service users, families, social workers, contractors, health professionals, health and safety staff, environmental services and CQC inspectors. They often manage large numbers of staff and millions of pounds worth of business. The SCA asserts they should be regarded as the lead professional among all of those who have dealings with the care home or domiciliary service rightly being regarded as ‘champion’, ‘leader’ and ‘protector’ for the service they manage. Come to this workshop to hear more and about our plans for building up a network of Registered Care Managers.

 | 2.30pm: Catering for Vegetarians – Good Practice in the Care Sector
Tina Fox, Director, Vegetarian for Life
This short DVD gives tips on how to make any vegetarian, vegan or meat reducing resident both happy and healthy without increasing costs or the time spent preparing meals. Tina Fox, Director of Vegetarian for Life, will give a brief overview of her organisations work and be available to answer any questions. Currently it is estimated that one in four care homes will have at least one vegetarian resident and many older people prefer to reduce their meat intake due to taste or digestive issues. These numbers are likely to increase as the “hippy generation” gets older and starts coming into the care sector and also as more people become concerned with health issues relating to diet.
