Kirsty Marais, Media Officer, Alzheimer’s Research UK

It seems you can’t open a newspaper today without being faced with the latest research that will deliver a cure for dementia. Brain training one week and red wine the next – are any of these things the cure? What should we really be taking from claims we see in the media and what should we trust?
This seminar will give an accessible overview of dementia research in the UK and overseas and provide an introduction to Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity. It will explore how progress is being made towards creating new treatments, preventions and improving diagnosis for all causes of dementia. It will leave you with an idea of where the great hope lies in research and some of the challenges scientists face

WorkshopsChair Cheerleading by Oomph

How can we get the ageing population exercising to benefit their bodies and minds?

Ben Allen and Steven Gardner, Oomph!
Oomph logoResidential care homes and nursing homes in the UK have diverse populations. From dementia to arthritis, depression to osteoporosis, regular exercise can provide huge benefits. In some cases exercise does not just improve but rather transform the lives of the residents. Before we demonstrate a fun chair based exercise class to the workshop (where everybody will be encouraged to take part!) we will discuss both the physiological and psychological benefits of exercise for the elderly, and what impact it can have. Each of the three workshops will be around twenty minutes long.
